The Next Chapter: Get To Know Ben Schreiner

Schreiner's Gardens Fourth Generation Ben Schreiner In The Iris Field

Meet the fourth-generation owner, who's helping guide the Schreiner's Gardens legacy into the future while staying true to the traditions that make this place a cherished destination and grower for iris lovers worldwide.

Growing Up In The Garden

Growing up as part of Schreiner's Gardens, Ben Schreiner had a unique perspective on the family business.

"My interests were always outside the farm growing up," shares Ben Schreiner. "So, I just sort of viewed it all as something my dad did."

That all changed when his father, third-generation farmer Ray Schreiner, brought him on board at the age of 12 to work summers in the iris fields. Though that time was less about legacy and more about earning soda money, the farm started to become a bigger part of his life.

"I remember my sister and I hanging out during bloom season when I was around third or fourth grade. There was a food truck here at that time that made Italian sodas," he recalls. "We loved those sodas so much I remember we tried to convince our mom to buy the Italian soda mixes so we could have them at home."

Finding A Path To The Farm

Though deeply rooted in the family legacy, the fourth-generation owner's journey to Schreiner's Gardens wasn't a direct one.

"I never planned to come into the business when I was in school," Ben admits. After earning a degree in politics and working as a freelance writer, the call of the family farm came at the age of 27, embracing the opportunity to help guide the family business into its next chapter.

Today, Ben is combining a fresh perspective with a deep respect for tradition to lead Schreiner's Gardens into its next chapter.

A Commitment To Legacy & Growth

What does it mean to carry a family business into its second century? For Ben, it's about balance.

"Each generation is tasked with making sure the business not only survives but thrives, so it's stronger than when they received it. If you can accomplished that, you've honored the past while steering into the future," states Ben.

Personal Favorites

When it comes to irises, one variety holds a special place in his heart:

"Señor Jinx. We named it after a favorite cat who used to walk the seedling fields with us in May." This dark beauty with its yellow beard is as striking as its namesake.

When it comes to seasons on the farm, Ben simply appreciates the changes and what they signal on the farm.

"I like spring and fall," he says. "Spring is exciting because it brings the irises into bloom. Fall is exciting because it signals the end of the harvest and planting season - which means a bit of a break from work."

Life On The Farm

When not overseeing the farm and gardens, Ben and his wife, Dana, live on the family farm with their two dogs, two cats and a flock of chickens.
