Behind The Blooms: Meet Our Third Generation Owner

At Schreiner’s Gardens, our roots run deep, and third-generation owner Liz Schreiner-Schmidt, embodies the heart and history of our family’s nearly century-long journey.

A Legacy Of Passion And Perseverance

With a childhood immersed in the beauty of iris farming and a career marked by dedication and innovation, she's helped shape our farm into what it is today.

Childhood Memories On The Farm

Growing up at Schreiner's Gardens meant being surround by fields of iris and a strong work ethic.

"When we were really young, we used to sell a few catalogs in the display garden by our house. It wasn't something we had to do, but it was fun when we wanted to," recalled Liz.

Her first official job was making retail boxes for orders at the age of 10. "I loved it!" said Liz. "The box machine and I became one as I tried to beat my own speed every time."

Over the years, she dabbled in nearly every role - field worker, trimmer, labeler, and even helping her dad proof charts at the dinner table. Though not every job was her strength ("I was pretty slow at hoeing the fields"), these experiences built her deep connection to the farm.

A Journey Back To The Family Business

Though she didn't initially plan to join Schreiner's Gardens, her heart eventually led her home.

"I wanted to do something to help people - human resources, social work, things like that," said Liz. "But after getting my degree in sociology and starting a family, I realized how much I loved my upbringing. I wanted my kids to grow up in the garden and be close to their grandma. That's when I decided to come back."

Returning to the farm wasn't just about family - it was about embracing a legacy of beauty, hard work, and the joy of irises.

Lessons From Generations Before

The values passed down through the Schreiner family have left a lasting impression.

"The work ethic and love for family and irises - it's all encompassing. Bloom season was always such a joyous time, and it's something I've carried into my leadership."

Under her guidance, Schreiner's Gardens has evolved with a focus on innovation and teamwork.

"We've taken steps to make processes easier for our crew. Even though we work hard, we have fun!"

Favorite Irises And Seasons

With so many varieties to choose from, picking an iris is no easy task.

"I could list about 25! Some of my top favorites are Dusky Challenger, Silverado, Island Blush, Cubs Win It, and Care To Dance. Each one has a special place in my heart."

As for her favorite season at the farm? That's an easy answer.

"Bloom Season, of course! It's like Christmas. The early spring crush of the garden is so beautiful - it's magical."

Beyond The Farm

When she's not managing the farm, Liz is deeply involved in her community and family life.

"Our family is our greatest joy - my husband Leonard, our children Josef, Bethany, and Luke. We also love spending time with our extended family, sharing laughter and delicious food."

Her time outside work reflects her creative spirit and love for nature.

"I love gardening, knitting, cooking, reading, and sewing quilts. I'm also proud to serve on the Oktoberfest board in our community."

Looking To The Future

As Schreiner's Gardens approaches its 100th anniversary in 2025, she remains focused on honoring the past while paving the way for future generations.
